If you’re not sure whether something goes in the blue bin, snap a pic of yourself with the questionable item (yes, we want to see you, too). We’ll check in with a recycling expert and run the answer in the papers – so we can keep learning together.

A question from Marianna Van Blarcom of West Milford, NJ. “Can greeting cards with glitter on them be recycled?”

“That’s a tricky one,” said West Milford Recycling Secretary Rena Coleman, who came down on the side of trash.

“If the glitter is really caked on heavy, then it probably can’t be accepted,” said Orange County Recycling Coordinator Ermin Siljkovic.

You can, however, cut out the glittery part and recycle the rest. “Before recycling a greeting card, remove parts that have glitter, foil, metal charms, felt cutouts and ribbons. All of these items will contaminate paper recycling,” advises New York State Recyclopedia.
