Three S.S. Seward Institute student-athletes have been recognized for their achievements:

Freshman Lauren Scheuermann

Scheuermann was selected to the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Section IX Girls’ Chapter All-Selection “Top 50” Team for the 2024-2025 season. She was surprised to be chosen for this honor as she’s a freshman, but appreciates the distinction.

“It is an amazing to me and such a nice surprise,” Scheuermann said. “As an athlete this means other coaches noticed me on the court and it’s such a great feeling.”

Scheuermann hopes to become a better basketball player by training hard. She has a goal of playing for an Amateur Athletic Union team.

She appreciates the fast-paced nature of basketball and Coach Joe DiMattina for making the game fun, but also encouraging her to be the best she can be.

She had some advice for aspiring basketball players: “Keep taking shots, keep your head in the game and always stay confident in yourself no matter what happens on the court.”

Senior Joe Staszeski and freshman Grey Whitmore

Staszeski and Whitmore made the first team All-Division for Class C & D by Section IX Basketball.

Staszeski is grateful for the honor, especially after persevering after suffering injuries this season. He noted that prioritizing fitness and staying disciplined is key to achieving goals.

“I never felt 100 percent but I still put in the work, stayed in the gym and took care of my body,” Staszeski recalled. “It means a lot to see that hard work pay off and be recognized.”

Staszeski also participates in track and field and looks forward to a strong season where he hopes to get bigger, faster and stronger so he can play college basketball.

“What I love most about basketball is the anticipation, nerves and excitement before a game,” he said. “I also really like dunking.”

Whitmore considers the recognition a blessing and said it is more special because he is a freshman. However, he will not rest on his laurels and intends to get stronger and sharpen his tools for next season.

“Getting recognized for your accomplishments is a feeling like none other,” Whitmore said.

For Whitmore, the energy during a basketball game is unmatched and he appreciates the constant action. For younger players to succeed, Whitmore advises them to stay consistent and confident, but also to keep their ego in check.

“I can’t emphasize enough about staying humble,” Whitmore said. “The day you let your ego win your mind over is the day you stop working hard.”
