Children's 2019 Book Festival draws huge crowds
Warwick. Glenn P. and Susan D. Dickes were praised for their generosity in funding all the expenses involved in presenting the event.
The weather was picture perfect on Saturday, Oct. 12.
And the eighth Children’s Book Festival, held that day on Railroad Avenue in the Village of Warwick, drew huge crowds.
The free admission event, presented by the Albert Wisner Public Library, the Village of Warwick and primary sponsors Glenn P. and Susan D. Dickes, featured 70 authors and illustrators of children’s books for grades Pre-K to 12. And many of the authors autographed their books.
Tommy Gardner, from the award-winning Uncle Brothers, and recording artist and bassist Barry Wiesenfeld provided musical entertainment.
And there were surprise visits by “Spiderman” and the mounted “Headless Horseman.”
This year’s event raised approximately $6,500 for the Library with almost 2,400 books sold in the space of five hours.
Rosemary Cooper, library director, said that the funds would be used to help support upcoming programs.
But she stressed that the primary purpose of the Children’s Book Festival was to encourage literacy at an early age.
Cooper also praised Glenn and Susan Dickes for their generosity in funding all the expenses involved in presenting the event at no cost to the Library or the taxpayers.
“The sun always shines on the Warwick Children’s Book Festival;” observed Glenn P. and Susan D. Dickes. “And this year was no different. Kudos to Lisa Laico and Judy Pederson for mounting, once again, a family friendly event promoting children’s literacy and fun."
