William P. Scheels, a lifelong resident of Monroe and police officer for 23 years, died peacefully at home on March 30, 2025, at the age of 64.
The son of Barbara Scheels and Joseph Scheels, he was born Oct. 10, 1960, in Suffern.
He was a member of The Monroe American Legion, Greenwood Lake Elks Lodge and the Harriman VFW.
He will be remembered for his lifelong commitment to the community, the memories he made with his wife of 42 years, his family and his love of animals - especially his dog Niko, who never left his side.
William is survived by his wife Lynn Scheels and their children: Christopher Scheels, Christie Esserman, Bryan Scheels, Jeffrey Scheels, Kimberlee Martini and Valerie Scheels. His daughter, Billielynn Scheels, predeceases him.
He is also survived by their four grandchildren: Lucas, Theo, Nicholas and Crew, and two more on the way, as well as his siblings Michael Scheels and his wife Kathleen Scheels and Wendy Scheels. His brother, Butch Scheels, predeceases him.
A Life Celebration will occur on Friday, April 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Center, 139 Stage Road, Monroe.
Cremation care will be provided under the direct supervision of Brendan and Thomas Flynn at Oxford Hills Crematory, Inc., Chester.
The family entrusted William’s care to the Flynn family and the Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Center’s staff.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to North Shore Animal League America, honoring his love for animals.
