"This vote reveals the unique character of Warwick'

Citizen activism overcame established power and money.

Once again, this vote (the defeat of the school district's proposed $14.9 million capital project) reveals the unique character of Warwick, reminds us that uphill efforts can win, and that education can extend beyond the classroom.

A quote from Gandhi was posted on a board at Ramapo College. "First they ignore us," he said. "Then they laugh at us; then they fight us; then we win."

(Although we were not laughed at this time, the basic message is sound - citizen activists must stay the course despite being ignored, mocked or attacked.)

Hopefully, this will strengthen our resolve with regard to future efforts. Some struggles, such as dealing with climate change, are more difficult, but we should savor the victories.

Without trying, our success rate would be zero, and this outcome is a better result for children's health and the environment we live in.

Have a great holiday season, and Cheers!
