The recent article in The Warwick Advertiser addressing the new Bail Reforms highlights glaring problems with the law’s implementation.

Many people are stunned that crimes such as aggravated assault of a child, selling a weapon to a minor, child pornography promotion and possession, and aggravated cruelty of animals are just a few of the offenses that are classified as “nonviolent.”

The Democrat majority in the Assembly and Senate that passed these laws, also voted to strip judges of the ability to consider an offender’s threat level to a community, their past-history of criminal behavior or their likelihood to return to court.

While many reasonable people support bail reform for a host of minor offenses, people realize that district attorneys and judges should have the discretion to do what is in the best interest of the offender and the community at large.

Senator Metzger is quoted as saying that she is now considering the input of law enforcement and her constituents , but we need legislators that actually consider such input, and the impact laws will have on the people they represent - before they vote for them.

Senator Metzger voted along party lines and supported legislation that is bad for the communities that she is supposed to be looking out for.
