Lady Spartans capture share of title
Florida - Lady Spartan soccer coach Joe DiMattina was an unhappy camper at half-time of last week’s home game against Tri-Valley. A win against the visiting Bears would give Florida a 7-1 record and a share of the Division V Title with Tuxedo. A successful penalty kick by Theresa Space gave the Lady Spartans a 1-0 lead at the half. But DiMattina felt his team was not working hard enough and that several potential goal-scoring opportunities had been wasted. Maybe it was the talk, maybe not, but 45 seconds into the second half freshman Jillian Collova nudged a pass to Space who finished it off, quickly giving the Lady Spartans a little breathing room and inching closer to that division title. All suspense was gone later in the second half as Space scored again, making the final 3-0. Florida ended the regular season at 16-2 (7-1 OCL). That win helped to ease the lingering disappointment from last Tuesday’s 1-0 loss at the hands of Tuxedo. A Seward win or a tie would have given the Lady Spartans the outright championship. There’s a possibility Florida and Tuxedo may meet again in the sectionals.
