Town Planning Board holding public scoping session for Pulpit Rock property

Stephen Kitar is the owner of the nearly 10-acre property at the corner of West Street Extension and County Route 1. He has proposed building a 62-room hotel and six cottages, each with eight units. The hotel would be 7,853 square feet, while the cottages would total approximately 15,000 square feet. An outdoor pool and parking for 94 cars is part of the plan.

Pulpit Rock is a 15-feet tall pillar that stands in a corner of the property. Kitar told The Warwick Advertiser in August that his prospective project would help solve an issue of a lack of accommodations in the town while keeping about six acres of the property open as parkland and preserving Pulpit Rock itself.

This property is in the town’s Suburban Residential Low Density Zoning District as well as the town’s Aquifer Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Overlay districts.

Kitar submitted a draft scoping document for the project, which outlines the areas proposed for study in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). The document is available on the town’s website, www.townofwarwick.org, as well as for viewing at the Albert Wisner Public Library. Residents may comment on the scoping document at the meeting or submit comments in writing by Jan. 2, 2020. Comments should be submitted to the Town of Warwick Planning Board, 132 Kings Highway, Warwick 10990.
