WARWICK — Sanfordville Elementary School has named a national Blue Ribbon School as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s 2012 awards for excellence.
U.S. Secretary of Education Anne Duncan has announced the winners this week.
Sanfordville’s nomination was based on the New York State 2011 Grades 3–5 English Language Arts and Mathematics assessments under the category “Exemplary High Performing Schools.”
In addition, students at Sanfordville Elementary School showed a trend over the past six years of high academic achievement as another criterion.
Under Principal Roger Longfield, Sanfordville’s teaching staff completed an extensive application that included commentary on the following:

Indicators of academic success.
Curriculum and instruction.
Assessment results.

The entire application can be viewed at www.warwickvalleyschools.com (Sanfordville Elementary).
In the press release announcing the award, Warwick School Superintendent Dr. Raymond Bryant said: “In addition to the outstanding staff and leadership at Sanfordville, credit must be given to Sanfordville’s hard-working students, dedicated parents and supportive community, without whose effort, help and commitment this achievement would not have been possible.”
According to the U.S. Department of Education’s Web site, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program “recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students’ levels of academic achievement.... A National Blue Ribbon School’s flag waving overhead has become a trademark of excellence, a symbol of quality recognized by everyone from parents to policy-makers in thousands of communities. In its 30 year history, the U. S. Department of Education has bestowed this coveted award on nearly 7,000 of America’s schools.”
Sanfordville is the second Warwick elementary school to receive the National Blue Ribbon School designation. Park Avenue Elementary School earned the recognition in 2006.
Sanfordville Elementary School representatives will attend the U.S. Department of Education’s 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools Conference and Awards Program in Washington, D.C., in November.
