Renzo Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu of Warwick celebrates grand opening
WARWICK — Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art and combat sport system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting.
It promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves or another against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage and, most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint locks and choke holds to defeat the opponent.
On Thursday, Oct. 4, Town of Warwick Supervisor Michael Sweeton, Kathleen O'Connell, a representative from the office of Assemblyman Karl Brabenec, and members of the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce joined owner Dave Mayer, his staff and associates to celebrate the official grand opening of Renzo Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu of Warwick
Mayer, who is a Team Renzo Gracie Black Belt and head instructor, has lived in the area for the last 10 years. He wanted to bring this exceptional martial arts closer to his home and said that opening up a Renzo Gracie Academy in Warwick has been a dream of his for years.
"Please feel free to stop by and learn about our classes," said Mayer.
Classes at the academy feature a strength and endurance building warm-up, followed by demonstration and practice of techniques after which students engage in live wrestling with other students of their own level.
The academy, located on the third floor at 62 Main St. in the Village of Warwick, is now offering classes for adults and children, as well as private instruction.
