puppets illustrate history

Puppets abound in Mrs. Stacey Waring’s 3 and 4 grade class at Calvary Christian Academy in Warwick. Each student read a book about a famous American of his or her own choosing and then created a sock puppet to resemble that person. The students then told the life stories and historical significance of their person in the form of a puppet show. The students chose such figures as John Adams, Clara Barton, Pocahontas, Helen Keller, Albert Einstein, Daniel Boone, Elizabeth Blackwell, Narcissa Whitman, Francis Scott Key, Anne Frank, Ronald Reagan, Harriet Tubman and George Washington Carver. The learning experience consisted of the students providing information about the childhood and adult life of each person, as well as why that person was famous, what obstacles he or she overcame and what surprised the student about that person’s life.
