Mount Peter Ski Area installs new lift

— When Mount Peter Ski Center opens for daily operations for the 2012-14 season, the ski area will feature a brand new lift.

The “Snowbasin Carpet" is a conveyor lift that resembles a moving walkway found in airports. It glides along flush with the surface of the snow, making it easier for beginners to practice their skills before they ride a chairlift.

The mountain crew is installing Mount Peter’s 200-foot carpet in the new mountain school learning area named "Snowbasin" located a short way from Sunrise Lodge.

Having the new lift will improve the learning experience at Mount Peter according to Karl Kullberg, Mountain Manager.

“The carpet will make learning to ski or snowboard so much easier for kids and adults and even more fun,” he said.

“Snowbasin” opens up some of the best learning terrain in the area. Guests new to snow sports can spend a lot of time and energy side-stepping or climbing to reach the top of a practice area.

The carpet will transport skiers and snowboarders up the hill in less than 1.2 minutes with 30 people on the conveyor at once, Kullberg said.

Look for Mount Peter to open just before or after Thanksgiving, but keep in mind the ski area needs a week or more of below freezing weather to make enough snow to start the season.
