Mount Peter HERoes in Deed event raises at least $2,270
WARWICK — Due to the unseasonably warm temperatures, Mother Nature may not have cooperated.
But thanks to a good base, extraordinary snow-making ability and excellent grooming, Mount Peter Ski Area's "HERoes in Deed" fund raiser was held as scheduled on Sunday Feb. 26.
Mount Peter offered free lift tickets for active military and veterans with a military ID. Military families also received a 10 per cent discount on lift tickets.
And for every lift ticket sold, Mount Peter donated $5 to HERoes in Deed
Later in the afternoon everyone was invited to snowtube for donations only and there was also a 50/50 Raffle to help the organization.
The event included live musical entertainment and a highlight of the day was the West Point Ski Team skiing down the mountain with the American and POW/MIA Flags.
The team presented them to the Minisink High School JROTC Color Guard who posted the Colors. Members of the Warwick Valley High School Meisters then sang the National Anthem. Representatives of Warwick's VFW Post 4662 were also on hand to assist with the event.
HERoes in Deed is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization inspired by the memory of its HERo, Warwick resident and Army Lt. Col. Jaimie E. Leonard, who was killed in Afghanistan on June 8, 2013.
Leonard was a graduate of Warwick Valley High School and the United States Military Academy at West Point. She was the highest-ranking woman killed in action in United States history.
HERoes in Deed hosts several events each year to fund scholarships for deserving Warwick Valley High School students. The organization also recently partnered with the Warwick Valley Historical Society to build a local nature play area. Ron Trapani, a veteran, will serve as project manager for the operation.
A portion of the proceeds from the Mount Peter event will go toward this project.
