WARWICK — On Saturday, June 11, Heroes in Deed will sponsor its third memorial run in honor of Lt. Col. Jaimie Leonard, a graduate of St. Stephen's - St. Edward's Elementary School and Warwick Valley High School, class of 1992.
Colonel Leonard, who also graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, was one of two Army officers and one private security contractor killed in Sharana, Afghanistan on June 8, 2013.
Leonard had also served in Bosnia and Iraq and was serving her second tour in Afghanistan. On that fateful day she became the highest ranking woman killed in action in US history.
The Memorial Day Hero Run will be held at the Warwick Valley Middle School, 225 West Street, beginning with a Kids Run at 8:45 a.m. and the adult 10k/ 5k run at 9:15 a.m.
Friends, who knew Col. Leonard, recalled that she loved to run for her health and to make a difference.
Entrée fees for the 10k/5k and a Kids Run in her honor will help fund scholarships for students at Warwick High School and support the military community in ways that mattered to Col. Leonard.
Heroes in Deed is in the process of learning more about the needs of the community and local veterans and service members to develop programs that will inspire and educate the community to recognize and serve with and for those who serve.
