'Coffee with a Cop'

WARWICK — In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. During that week, in many communities, local police departments will sponsor one day to have, "Coffee with a Cop."
Ideas and concernsOn Tuesday May 12, from 8 to 9:30 a.m., local residents are invited to have "Coffee with a Cop," at the Tuscan Café on South Street in the Village of Warwick.
This event, which had its beginnings in California in 2011 and then spread across the nation, is designed to be an opportunity for police and local citizens to get together in an informal setting and discuss community issues over a cup of coffee.
"I look forward to sitting informally with some residents and see what they have to say about the community and the police," said Warwick Police Chief Thomas McGovern Jr. "Obviously we can't speak about investigations, but we are happy to get ideas from the public about their concerns."
The venueThe social setting is designed to build friendly relationships and to address issues or answer questions in a mutually candid and sincere manner.
The owners of the Tuscan Café, Kristen Ciliberti and Cristie Ranieri, were pleased that their restaurant had been selected as the first venue for this event.
"We grew up in this community and after owning a business for the past 10 years, we are excited to be able to connect people in our community in a forum where it is easy and comfortable to ask questions with police officers," said Ciliberti. "Cristie has already spoken with some of our customers and they have many questions ranging from car seat safety to parking violations. We hope this event can help to create more of a connection in our entire community and invite anyone who might have a question to come down and be a part."
Warwick Police Lt. John Rader, instrumental in launching this first time event, is also looking forward to an opportunity to meet and talk with local residents, especially during Police Week.
