Applications being accepted for Orange County Police Officer/Deputy Sheriff Civil Service Exam

Orange County is now accepting applications for the Police Officer/Deputy Sheriff Civil Service Exam.
Applications must be postmarked by the last filing date of July 1 or be physically brought into the Human Resources Office at the Government Center in Goshen by close of business July 3.
The written exam will be held on Sept. 14.
“If you have ever considered a career in law enforcement, now is the time to act,” Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus said in the press release detailing the test. “Police officers play a very important role in our society and those who decide to pursue a career in law enforcement are to be commended for their public service.”
Added Commissioner of Human Resources Steven M. Gross: “Under New York State Civil Service Law, a Civil Service eligible list is in effect for up to four years. All individuals who meet the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply for the exam as the window of opportunity to apply is limited.”
In order to apply for the exam a $50 non-refundable application processing fee is required payable to Commissioner of Finance. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the exam to be admitted. In addition, applicants must also pass a physical fitness screening test.
Minimum qualifications required for admission to the exam:
Your application must clearly indicate possession of the following requirements as of the last filing date noted above: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and either:
A. Three years of active military experience in the armed forces of the United States with an honorable discharge, or currently serving in the armed forces of the United States with a minimum of three years of active duty service; or
B. Completion of 60 college credits; or
C. Completion of 30 college credits and the equivalent of one year of work experience as a police officer, correction officer, police dispatcher, licensed security guard or other related experience in the law enforcement, corrections or military field; or
D. An equivalent amount of training and experience as defined by the limits of (B) and (C) above.
For purposes of qualifying under option (D), fifteen (15) credits is the equivalent of six months work experience.
Note bene
Completion of a Basic Police Officer Training Course as approved by the NYS Municipal Training Council will be accepted as the equivalent of fifteen college credits.
Any service branch of the United States Armed Forces. If not currently active, must provide proof of honorable discharge.
Age requirements: Applicants must be no less than 19 years of age or more than thirty-five (35) years of age as of the date of the written examination. Candidates must be 20 years of age to be certified for appointment to the title of Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff.
Applicants who were born before Sept. 14, 1984 are not eligible to compete in the Sept. 14, 2019 administration of this examination except for those persons who were engaged in military duty as defined in Section 243 (10-a) of the New York Military Law. Qualified applicants may deduct from their actual age the length of time spent in such military duty, provided the total deduction does not exceed six years.
