Annual Sidewalk Sale enjoys good weather and large crowds
WARWICK — The weather prediction for Saturday, July 9, called for heavy rain. But the rain held off and those visiting Warwick's annual Sidewalk Sale that cloudy day were compensated with comfortable temperatures.
And, on Sunday, July 10, except for a few dark clouds and an occasional sprinkle, they enjoyed lots of sun and blue skies.
There were also plenty of vendors and non-profits stationed along Main Street and Railroad Avenue along with outdoor dining and several fun contests.
Event Chair Corrine Iurato, manager of Peck's Wines and Spirits, reported that this year's July Sale was another big success.
Once again Literacy Orange, a not-for-profit agency dedicated to raising the literacy rate in the community through one-to-one or small group adult tutoring had an opportunity to hold a used book sale on Railroad Green during the Sidewalk Sale.
Ye Olde Warwick Book Shoppe was the drop-off for book donations and the organization sold hundreds of books.
"This is the fifth year the July Sale has helped Literacy Orange," said Iurato, "and it has become the charity the merchants and community will continue to support."
For the third consecutive year, Literacy Orange also sponsored a "Dog-Person Look Alike" contest.
On Saturday Frank's Pizza also sponsored a pizza-eating contest.
And on Sunday there were pie-eating contests for both children and adults sponsored by Noble Pies.
"We had a good turnout," said Tom Roberts, president of the Merchant Guild and owner of Ye Olde Warwick Book Shoppe. "And thanks to the visitors and the generosity of the book donors, Literacy Orange sold lots of books. That was the big success story of the weekend."
The annual Sidewalk Sale is hosted by the Warwick Merchants Guild with local shops and eateries contributing to fund the event.
