Local artists and volunteers create new community mural

Warwick - With lots of help from volunteers, professional artists Mark and Samantha Stankiewicz of wecreatemurals.com and 7 West Street Art Studio, have created another community mural. More than 60 individual community volunteers including adults, teens and children as young as two were enlisted as the artists guided and supervised the painting of the mural during the Art on the Green monthly events at Railroad Green. During the first session, volunteers got into the swing of things by helping to prime the four 4 x 8 foot boards with white outdoor enamel paint. Mark Stankiewicz then sketched the scenes onto the boards using spray paint. As participants came along and became interested, people seven years old and up were given parts of the design to paint. Children six and under were provided with precut stars, butterflies, apples and frogs to creatively paint and then temporarily put aside. The pre-cut pieces, explained Stankiewicz, “will be added onto the mural at the end using a decoupage technique of applying clear acrylic coating under and over the pieces to seal them into the design.” The final step will be for the couple to refine the design by cleaning up edges and adding details. A location for the mural, however, has not yet been confirmed. Last year’s mural was placed at Stanley-Deming Park. “We are still looking for anyone who would like to volunteer to help create a frame for the final piece,” said Stankiewicz. Anyone interested should e-mail him at: contact@wecreatemurals.com.
