William J. Cerk (aka Cerkvenik) of Warwick, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, at Villa Marie Claire in Saddle River, N.J. He was 93 years old.
Born on Aug. 29, 1925, in New York City, he was the son of Joseph and Lea (Bloker) Cerkvenik.
He was married for 62-1/2 years to the late Muriel (Milo) Cerkvenik (2012).
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a Police Officer with the NYC Police Department for 36 years before retiring. He worked in the Intelligence Division of the NYPD at City Hall in New York City.
He was a member of the Policemen’s Benevolent Association in New York City and the Orange County Shields for more than 20 years.
He is survived by his children: Dr. Kathleen Cerkvenik of Midland Park, N.J., and Warwick, William Cerkvenik and his wife Kathleen of Wilmington, N.C., Harold Cerkvenik of Pearl River, Robert Cerkvenik of Staten Island and Michael Cerkvenik and his wife Leah of Atlantic Highlands, N.J.; five grandchildren: Lea Anne Bille, Carol Maffei, Christopher Cerkvenik, Daniel Cerkvenik and Brian Cerkvenik; ten great-grandchildren: Megan Maffei, Brianna Maffei, Connor Bille, Lindsey Maffei, Dylan Bille, Kyle Bille, Jeffrey Cerkvenik, Braxton Cerkvenik, MacKenzie Cerkvenik and Colton Cerkvenik. He is also survived sisters Dorothy Bell of Odenton, Md., and Evelyn Burtner of Winter Park, Fla.
Visitation was held Oct. 16 at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home, Warwick.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Oct. 17 at St. Stephen RC Church in Warwick.
Interment followed in St. Joseph's Cemetery in the Village of Florida.
