Roger Herbert Metzger

    On April 28, 2017, there was a departure in part from the usual Arbor Day ceremony at Stanley-Deming Park when it honored outgoing Village Tree Commissioner Roger Metzger, a 50-year veteran of the Commission and its Commissioner for more than 40 of those years.

Roger Herbert Metzger of Warwick passed away on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018 at the age of 83.
He was the son of Altha and Herbert Metzger of Ramsey, N.J.
Roger is survived by his wife Susan; his two sons: William Metzger (Veronica) of Warwick and Robert Metzger (Jeanette) of Fairport; and his two stepsons: Micah O’Connor (Jennifer) of Warwick and Jerrod O’Connor (Lara Couturier) of Barrington, R.I. He is also survived by his sister, Dian Mac Nichol of Gormania, W.V. He was proud of his nine grandchildren: Jonathan (Chelsea), Renee (Joseph Hetzler), Loren and Bria Metzger; and Aidan, Charlotte, Luke, Jackson and Rory O’Connor. He took special joy in meeting his great grandson, Caleb Metzger.
He was predeceased by his wife, Janet Louise Metzger, his brother William Metzger and his parents.
Roger worked for Orange and Rockland Utilities for 30 years, retiring as Director of Environmental and Administrative Services.
He graduated from the University of Maine School of Forestry and proudly served for the U.S. Forest Service in the Coconino National Forest.
Roger loved his family and his community. He devoted many hours to making Warwick a good place to live.
He served as a Boy Scout Leader, as chair of the Orange County Planning Board, as chair of the Planning Board for the Village of Warwick and as Village Trustee.
He was the Village of Warwick Shade Tree Commissioner for 43 years and conducted Arbor Day Celebrations for Warwick’s children.
He was a member of many organizations.
Roger loved to travel and visited every one of the seven continents and countless countries.
A Memorial service was held Oct. 10 at Lazear-Smith & Vander Plaat Memorial Home in Warwick.
