John 'Cigar' Yanosh
John “Cigar” Yanosh of Florida, N.Y., a lifelong resident of the area, entered into rest on Saturday, July 9, 2016. He was 93.
The son of Maximillian and Olga Yablonski Yanosh, he was born March 14, 1923, in Goshen.
He was the past manager of the Pine Island CYO and played basketball on the team. He was a life member of the Pulaski Fire Company of 70 years. He was 1988 Fireman of the Year, past vice president of the company and past chairman of the Christmas party for the children.
He was a past member of the Pine Island Ambulance Corps. He was also a past president of the Pine Island Seniors.
He was also active on many Orange County Onion Harvest Festival Committees.
Survivors include stepson Raymond Pikul and his wife Kelly and stepson,Walter Pikul and his wife Judy; stepdaughter Joyce Simmons; step grandchildren: Melissa and Allison Pikul; eight nieces: Joan Karalis, Diane Yanosh, Louise Cummings, Rose Pawliczak, Theresa Kelley, Martha Santos, Christine Hink and Teresa Yanosh; five nephews, Fred Dembeck, Louis Miloszewski Jr., Dave, Stephen and Daniel Yanosh; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Jane Pikul Yanosh; six brothers: Alexander, Andrew, Charley, Nicholas, Peter and Michael Yanosh; and two sisters: Julia Dembeck and Anna Miloszewski.
Funeral services were held July 13 at T.S. Purta Funeral Home in Pine Island.
Burial was in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Pine Island.
