Teen hurt in boating accident
WEST MILFORD. Off-duty Vernon police officer aids teen struck by boat propeller on Greenwood Lake.
An 18-year-old man was seriously injured in a boating accident June 20 on Greenwood Lake, police said.
At about 6 p.m., off-duty Vernon Police Cpl. Steve Rovetto, who was on the lake, called 911 to report that he saw a teen in the water who had been struck by a boat propeller.
He improvised a tourniquet out of rope for the injury, then accompanied the teen by boat to the South Shore Marina. They were met by West Milford Police Sgt. Jonathan Bregman, who applied a tourniquet.
Bregman requested a medivac helicopter because of the seriousness of the injury. The victim was taken to the helicopter by West Milford ambulance.
Hackensack Air-1 then took him to Hackensack University Medical Center.
Assisting at South Shore Marina were West Milford Police Officers Mike Weber, Carolyn Guevara and James McMahon. Trooper Thomas Gilroy of the New Jersey State Police Marine Unit conducted the investigation.
