Young people in the service
MONROE-Word came this week from the Hometown News Service of the U.S. Navy and Air Force this week of two recent Monroe-Woodbury High School graduates: Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Christina E. Gallagher, daughter of Ruth M. Gallagher of Monroe, recently departed on a routine scheduled deployment to the Mediterranean Sea while assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS Gonzalez, which is based in Norfolk, Va. Gallagher's ship deployed along with USS Ponce and USS Ashland as part of the USS Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group in support of the global war on terrorism and Operations Enduring/Iraqi Freedom. Gallagher joined the Navy in August 2000. Air Force Airman John C. Fusik, the son of Joann Fusik of Monroe, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Fusik is a 2004 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School.
