Yiddish theater troupe to perform in Monroe
MONROE-The Folksbiene Yiddish Theater will bring a taste of the Yiddish Stage to Monroe in the form of a review entitled “Mama’s Loshn Kugel” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, at Monroe Temple Beth-El at 314 North Main St. in Monroe. The group of performers, known as The Folksbiene Troupe or Di Trupe, will sing classic Yiddish songs and performing sketches from the Yiddish Theatre. The audience does not have to understand Yiddish to understand the performance, as the English translation is projected on a screen above the actors as they perform. Di Trupe is a group of young people who came to the Yiddish world in their twenties and thirties and are finding their artistic expression through performance in the Yiddish language. They learned Yiddish through YIVO Institute for Jewish Research’s Uriel Weinreich Summer Program, The Workmen’s Circle and The Jewish Theological Seminary. The troupe performs in Yiddish, rehearses in Yiddish, and even socializes in Yiddish. The Continuing Education Committee at the temple arranged for the appearance of the group. The performance will be preceded by a dessert reception at 2 p.m. The cost of admission, to both the reception and performance, is $18. Call 783-2626 to reserve a ticket.
