Woodbury Historical Society announces two events
CENTRAL VALLEY-The Woodbury Historical Society announces two events related to Freedom Quilts, which were used to prepare and guide slaves on their journey on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War: On Tuesday Nov. 2 (Election Day), from 3-4 p.m. Join the Woodbury Historical Society and the Woodbury Public Library for stories and crafts related to the Freedom Quilts. For children in grades 3 and 4. This event is at the Gatehouse Complex on Smith Clove Road in Central Valley. Call the library at 928-2114 to register. Saturday, Nov. 6, at 2:30 p.m. Trish Chambers, a local Civil War re-enactor, will present a program at the Woodbury Seniors Center, 16 County Route 105 in Highland Mills. This presentation, performed in period dress and using a facsimile of a Freedom Quilt, gives a brief history of the Underground Railroad. Chambers will discuss the use of quilts as a method of communication used by slaves seeking freedom and how African traditions gave rise to the concept of story quilts.
