The Friends of Sterling Forest (F.S.F.) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization established to protect and preserve the great legacy of natural resources and historical treasures within Sterling Forest State Park. Our events are open to the public and free of charge; donations, however, are gratefully accepted to assist us in fulfilling our mission.

Friends of Sterling Forest annual meeting

Sunday, Oct. 3 at noon

All members are encouraged to attend the annual meeting of the F.S.F. The agenda will include the nomination and election of officers for the coming year, as well as an update on current activities and events. All members are invited to attend.

Lecture: Bears

Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.

Black bears live here, this is their domain, and we are the visitors. How do we co-exist? How do we keep them out of our kitchens? Join Doc Bayne for an interesting Power Point about our neighbors. Lecture is limited to 25 people and masks are required in the Visitor’s Center.

Midweek hike: Long Swamp

Thursday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m.

Join members of the F.S.F. for a hike on the beautiful and lush Long Swamp Trail that features a 60-foot bridge built as an Eagle Scout project. The trail is about three miles long with gentle to moderate ups and downs. Linda Pallack will be your guide.

Midweek hike: Bare Rock

Thursday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m.

Hike to Bare Rock Overlook and enjoy a spectacular view of Greenwood Lake and Bellvale Mountain. Join F.S.F. member Susan Serico on this moderately paced out-and-back hike of approximately six miles. Be sure to wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes and bring a snack/lunch and water.

Hike: Sterling Lake Loop

Sunday, Oct. 17 at p.m.

Join F.S.F. member Susan Serico for a leisurely-paced four-mile loop hike around picturesque Sterling Lake. We’ll take a short break on the beach to take in the refreshing lake breezes. Bring a snack/lunch and water and be sure to wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots.

Sterling Fire Tower cab and Ranger Station open to the public Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Oct. 10, thanks to volunteers provided through the F.S.F.

Essentials

The trails can be steep and rocky, so please wear sturdy hiking shoes. Our hikes will include stops along the way to interpret natural and historic features.

Hunting is allowed in portions of Sterling Forest State Park, we suggest wearing hunter orange or bright colors other than white during the hunting season.
