Pavilion residents enjoy lunch and gambling

WARWICK—It’s not every day that a resident at Schervier Pavilion, a skilled nursing facility on the Warwick Healthcare Campus, has an opportunity to win a hundred dollars. But that’s what Carol McCoy did when she and a group of other residents and staff took a day trip on Thursday, Sept. 15, to the Mighty M Casino in Monticello. Like many others, McCoy eventually gave some of her winnings back to the casino. But that didn’t spoil the day of gaming. Although the trip was a pleasant excursion away from daily routine, it had another important value. “The purpose of recreational therapy,” said Karen Call, a certified therapy recreation specialist, “is to restore, treat or rehabilitate in order to improve functioning and independence as well as reduce or eliminate the effects of illness or disability. Therapeutic recreation is essential to the quality of life and the quality of care of individuals receiving health and human services.” Day trips, such as the trip to Mighty M Casino and another recent visit to Gasho Japanese Steakhouse, are something to look forward to and then talk about. “This was so nice. I’m so happy we came here,” said McCoy. “And it was my lucky day.”
