MONROE-Monroe-Woodbury High School sophomore Madeline Huberth was the featured guest artist with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, playing cello in a series of Young People's Concerts touring our region last week. She earned this honor by winning the prestigious Virtuosi-in-Progress Competition last fall. She played the emotionally moving Symphonic Variations for Cello and Orchestra by French composer Leon Boellmann at the Bardavon Opera House in Poughkeepsie and Twin Towers Middle School in Middletown. Earlier this year Huberth, 16, sat principal cello with the National Festival Orchestra at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss. She attends Manhattan School of Music Preparatory School and will be attending the Boston University Tanglewood Institute this summer as part of the Young Artists Orchestra. In addition to the cello she is an accomplished pianist and has been featured in performances at Eisenhower and Steinway Halls. "I was especially happy," Huberth said, "when a whole group of students and teachers came from Monroe-Woodbury to support me. It helped me play my best."
