SUNY Orange hosts Jazz Weekend on Nov. 18 and 19 Middletown — SUNY Orange hosts Jazz Weekend 2011 next Friday and Saturday evenings, Nov. 18 and 19, in Orange Hall, located at the corner of Wawayanda and Grandview avenues in Middletown. Six ensembles will perform on two nights in Orange Hall Theatre. Each evening jazz will begin at 6:30 p.m. with CDS-3: Carlton Jay, piano, Darius Molfetas, guitar, and Mike Sutton, bass. In addition, the group will play between sets. Tim Malcolm, the arts and entertainment editor of the Times Herald-Record, will be the emcee both evenings. Friday Friday is Latin Night, showcasing performances by the Marko Marcinko Latin Jazz Quintet at 7 p.m. and Willie Martinez and La Familia Sextet at 8:15 p.m. Finishing the evening at 9:30 p.m. will be the Edmar Castaneda Trio, featuring Edmar Castaneda on jazz harp with of Dave Silliman on percussion and drums and vocalist Andrea Tierra. Saturday An opportunity for area students will take place when these talented young musicians play under the direction of Mitch Frohman, leader of the Bronx Horns. A free concert of Tito Puente pieces will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19. During that concert, Frohman will solo on sax. Then, two very different quintets start and finish the evening with a superb big band in the middle. At 7 p.m., the Chris Parker Quintet with piano, bass, drums, violin and featuring Peter Epstein on sax, play a mix of original Latin, funk and straight-ahead jazz tunes. At 8:15 p.m., the big band sound comes on stage with the 17-piece Westchester Jazz Orchestra. To cap off the evening and finish the jazz weekend, the Joe Lovano Us Five with the unique elements of two drummers, piano, and bass and featuring Joe Lovano on saxophone.
