Ladybug release party at Birnberg Preserve

| 27 Jun 2016 | 09:00

Join the Orange County Land Trust in helping to save New York State’s official insect, the nine-spotted ladybug. This family-friendly outing at Birnberg Preserve aims to celebrate these iconic insects while raising awareness and aiding in their restoration. The event is on Saturday, July 9, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Nine-spotted ladybugs are critical to controlling pests that damage gardens and crops. Unfortunately, populations of these native ladybugs have steadily declined over the years while non-native species of ladybugs have flourished in their place. Scientists and experts hope to provide a major boost to these beneficial bugs through restorative measures, including releases of native larvae.
Ladybug release party-goers will partake in a number of fun and fascinating activities, including assisting in releasing ladybug larvae, nature crafts and an educational scavenger hunt.
Wearing long pants, closed-toe sneakers, and applying sunscreen are recommended. Bring water.
A donation of $5 per person is suggested with proceeds benefiting the stewardship of the Land Trust’s preserved lands. Pre-registration is required. Call 845-534-3690 x18 or e-mail Jeremy@OCLT.org to pre-register or for more details and/or directions.
Birnberg Preserve is located off Greycourt Road in Chester.
This program is in conjunction with the Lost Ladybug Project, an initiative of the Department of Entomology at Cornell University.
For more than 20 years, the Orange County Land Trust has worked to preserve Orange County’s important natural resources, scenic landscapes and working farmland, resulting in the preservation of over 5,000 acres of land. For more information, visit www.oclt.org.
