Ghosts, Gothic Poetry and bats
GREENWOOD LAKE — The Greenwood Lake Public Library welcomes back Orange County Poet Laureate (2017-2019) Robert Milby and educator/inventor Jerry Schneider with programs that should get patrons in the spirit of the upcoming Halloween season.
'Gothic and Ghostly Poetry'On Sunday, Oct. 21, from noon to 2 p.m., Milby will host “Gothic and Ghostly Poetry.”
He will be presenting a timely collection of spooky poetry for the Halloween season, joined by Margaret Fox, Alyta Adams, Christopher P. Gazeent, Ariana Den Bleyker and Walter Worden.
He is also welcoming local poets as the program will include an open mic period for those who wish to participate.
Born in Goshen, Milby grew up in Monroe and Highland Falls. He began writing poetry in 1987 as a student at James I. O’Neill High School.
He graduated from SUNY Orange in 1993, hosting events throughout the county since 1995.
Milby hosts poetry series at the Mudd Puddle Café in New Paltz, the Florida Public Library and Noble Coffee Roasters in Campbell Hall among others. He is the also author of five books of poetry.
'Bats: Sounds in Silence'On Thursday, Nov. 8, from 7 to 8 p.m., Jerry Schneider will be in to present “Bats: Sounds in Silence.”
Schneider will discuss the exotic world of bats and answer questions such as “why can’t we hear them?” and “are bats blind?”
He will explain that there is no need to be afraid of these animals and that they are actually vital to maintaining a healthy environment.
Schneider, inventor of the award winning “Butterfly Game,” has presented nature programs in schools and libraries for the past thirteen years throughout the Eastern United States.
Based in Vermont,Schneider will also be able to enlighten participants about their community’s local bat population.
