Deadheads: Grateful Dead tribute weekend at Warwick Valley Winery
Warwick Warwick Valley Winery and Distillery is hosting the second annual tribute to the music of the Grateful Dead on Aug. 22 and 23 at the winery. The festival, which runs from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, will celebrate the music of the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia. Artists performing at this year’s festival include Steve D and Foolish Heart, McMule, Soylent Blue, and WigJam On Sunday Rob Schiff, the Gratefulband, Reflections, Uncle Shoehorn and the Deadbeats will be performing. Also performing on Saturday and Sunday will be the Donna Jean Godchaux band. Donna Jean was a vocalist at both Muscle Shoals Sound Studios and Fame Studios, home of “Muscle Shoals Sound,” on records like Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds,” Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman,” and Boz Scagg’s eponymous first solo album. She moved to San Francisco, married Keith Godchaux, and spent the 1970s as a vocalist in the Grateful Dead as well as the Jerry Garcia Band. After life with the Dead, she and Godchaux formed the Heart of Gold Band with drummer Greg Anton and guitarist Steve Kimock. Following various side trips, she resumed serious focus on her singing in the 90s, recording a new Heart of Gold Band album, At the Table, and singing with Phil and Friends and her own Donna Jean Band. Donna Godchaux will be joined at the winery by Jeff Mattson, Clint Bailey, David MacKay and Joe Chirco, who came to prominence as the lead guitarist, primary vocalist, and leader of Long Island’s legendary Grateful Dead-influenced jam band, the Zen Tricksters. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Coolers are not permitted. Panéé, the winery bakery café, will be serving food both indoors and at the outside barbecue.
