Sarah McHugh to offer seascape painting workshop this Sunday Central Valley Award winning artist/instructor Sarah McHugh will be teaching an acrylic seascape painting workshop on Sunday, July 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Michael’s in Central Valley. Participants will learn how to paint the movement and reflections on water and wet sands, the light and textures by the sea, handle the materials, mix the colors and more. Oh my: Butterflies, dragonflies and frogs at Hunter Farm Preserve Slate Hill The Orange County Land Trust will hold its popular, family friendly outing Butterflies, Dragonflies and Frogs Oh My! on Saturday, July 9, beginning at 10 a.m. at Hunter Farm Preserve in Slate Hill. Join naturalist and artist John Yrizzary as he guides participants along The Tadpole Trail, the land trust’s exploratory nature trail for children at the preserve. Hunter Farm Preserve is a 60-acre nature preserve with an abundance of wildlife. The ponds are home to beaver, heron, wood ducks, turtles, and frogs and of course, dragonflies. The fields and meadows are a habitat for numerous bird species and over 28 documented species of butterfly. In fact, one of the largest concentrations of butterfly in the eastern United States is found at Hunter Farm Preserve. The entire family will enjoy this easy walk with seven activity stations that focus on the preserve’s natural habitat and seasonal indicators of wildlife and plant life. Participants should bring water and wear bug and tick repellent. A donation of $5 per person or $10 per family is suggested, with all proceeds going towards the future stewardship of Land Trust nature preserves. Applewood Winery presents Groovy Tuesday on Saturday Warwick Applewood Winery will present a summer evening concert, “Groovy Tuesday,” on Saturday, July 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. The concert will showcase music from the 60s and 70s featuring songs from both sides of the pond, from New York to Liverpool. Admission to the concert is $10 per person which includes a free wine tasting in the Tasting Room. Events are held rain or shine. Concerts are held on the lawn and lawn chairs and blankets are welcome. In the event of rain concerts are held in the Apple Barn. The café is open featuring a light menu and sangrias. Symphonic band to hold concert on July 14 Newburgh SUNY Orange’s Symphonic Band will conduct its inaugural Kaplan Hall performance at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, July 14, on the college’s Newburgh campus, capping an evening alumni reception that will honor SUNY Orange’s Class of 2001 and Newburgh area graduates. A special highlight for the concert will be Carlos Chavez’s exotic “Toccata for Percussion Ensemble” performed by the members of the band’s percussion section. The alumni reception will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Kaplan Hall and is open to all alumni. County to host herb day at Hill-Hold GOSHEN The Orange County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation will host its annual herb day program on Tuesday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gwen Sutherland Kaiser, the day’s featured speaker, will present “Herbaceous Cocktails.” She has served as master mixologist for CocktailTimes.com and is a consultant for Brotherhood Winery. She’s currently writing her first book, “Zodiac Cocktails,” and has a blog on the topic. The presentation will be followed by an herb-oriented luncheon provided by Holbert’s Catering, served under a tent on the front lawn of Hill-Hold Museum. The day’s activities will also include a raffle and silent auction. Books on herbs, potted herb plants, and other gift shop items will be offered for sale. Tickets for Herb Day are $45 per person, and include the lecture and lunch. Pre-payment and advance reservations will be required for this event.
