WARWICK — Congratulations to the Warwick Valley Middle School Ice Hockey Team on their victory over Lakeland Middle School.
The two teams faced off on Feb. 28 at the Skylands Ice World in Hardyston, New Jersey, in a hard-fought battle for the upper division Middle School championship.
In 2014, Warwick resident Jim De Sotle, whose son Tyler is on the Warwick team, was part of a group of Warwick ice hockey parents leading the effort to re-establish ice hockey at the Middle School level.
He was at the game and reported that Lakeland opened the scoring two minutes into the first period but was quickly answered by Warwick.
A late first period goal made it 2-1 Warwick going into the second.
The second period was a defensive battle with Warwick being out-shot 9-3.
Warwick finally capitalized on a long offensive zone possession and made the score 3 -1 going into the third period.
The scoring continued in the third period with Warwick putting three more past the Lakeland goalie.
Lakeland, De Sotke added, was not done, however. They scored two more goals in the third.
The final score was 6-3 in favor of Warwick and they were the 2017-2018 Middle School Champions.
"A special thank you to the bench coaches Tom Boudreau and Tucker Oswald," said De Sotle, "for a great season and the incredible mentoring they give our boys. And a big thank you to our General Manager, Al Cann, for his leadership this season."
