WARWICK — Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to lose weight and become healthier.
On Saturday, April 16, Physical Therapist Dr. Rick Rutkowski gave that message and added that the benefits of walking for just 30 minutes each day can help prevent chronic diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, manage current illnesses, produce higher levels of energy, normalize sleeping patterns, improve self-esteem and loose weight safely.
Rutkowski, owner of Optimum Performance Physical Therapy in Warwick, was addressing approximately 30 people who came to participate in the first annual community wide Warwick Walk and Workout at the Town Park on Union County Road.
The event, which Rutkowski expects will grow larger each year, was sponsored by Optimum Performance and supported by Warwick ShopRite. The supermarket provided healthy refreshments and offered expert advice from ShopRite's dietician on good food choices.
He also stressed the importance of having fun while walking and perhaps pausing to toss a Frisbee, kick a ball or perform a few exercises.
Rutkowski has served for more than 25 years as a physical therapist and personal trainer. Over that time, he earned his clinical doctoral degree and multiple certifications.
Early in his career he attended a four-month sports medicine fellowship observing some of the most well renowned orthopedic surgeons in the country while also earning hundreds of hours in athletic training.
After his brief welcoming talk, Rutkowski led the group in some important warm-up exercises before heading out on a few circuits around the picturesque park field, that included walking backward as well as forward and stopping for a variety of simple exercises for all ages.
"Our mission," he said, "is to promote and implement the American College of Sports Medicine's concept that 'Exercise is medicine.'"
