Measles alert

GOSHEN — The Orange County Department of Health is advising of a New York City resident with confirmed measles visited Woodbury Common Premium Outlets on Sunday, March 31.
Potential exposure may have happened to people who have visited the Nike Factory Store or Sayki Men’s Fashion Store that day between 4 and 9 p.m.
Anyone who visited the property outside of this time frame is not at risk from this particular exposure.
According to the county health department, if a person is immune to measles, it is unlikely that he or she would become ill if exposed. A person is considered immune if he or she was born before Jan. 1, 1957, has received two doses of the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccine or has a lab test confirming immunity.
Those individuals who are not immune or not sure if they have been vaccinated are at risk of developing measles.
Symptoms include a fever, rash, cough, conjunctivitis (reddened eyes) and/or runny nose.
Symptoms usually appear in 10-12 days after exposure but may begin as early as seven days or take as long as 21 days.
Cases in Rockland and Orange countiesA six-month measles outbreak has Rockland County in a state of emergency, with unvaccinated kids barred first from school and then, in a move that made international headlines, from public places.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day and health officials say the extraordinary measures are necessary to protect the public from a highly contagious and potentially dangerous disease.
This measles outbreak originated in late September with Orthodox Jews returning from Israel and has been almost exclusively contained within the Orthodox community.
It’s the longest outbreak since measles was declared eradicated in the United States in 2000.
In November it spread to Orange County, where there have been a total of 15 confirmed cases since the fall, said Orange County Deputy Commissioner of Health Chris Ericson.
As of April 2, there were “one or two cases in the few past weeks” that they were still following up on, he said.
