Larry Coryell Trio plays Orange Hall
MIDDLETOWN — The Larry Coryell Trio is playing at Orange Hall Theatre. Come to listen to this godfather of jazz-rock perform in concert with drummer-great Steve Johns and emerging bassist Daryl Johns on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m.
For the past five decades, pioneering fusion guitarist Larry Coryell has been creating artistically unfettered and genre-defying music that transcends easy classification. His musical expression has taken Coryell on a diverse journey, as he explored everything from psychedelic rock to unaccompanied acoustic music to straight-ahead bebop. These musical voices have enabled him to make his mark in music by way of the jazz and fusion world. He is comfortable in almost every style, covering almost every base from the most decibel-heavy, distortion-laden electric work to the most delicate, soothing, intricate lines on acoustic guitar.
Steve Johns is the consummate team player as he always manages to retain his own singular sound and distinctive musical persona while serving the common purpose of any group of which he is a part. For this reason, artists from all points on the musical spectrum have consistently sought him out because they know his musicianship, versatility, deep commitment to his craft, and enthusiasm.
Daryl Johns, son of Steve, has performed and recorded with a remarkable variety of musicians and communities. Even at his young age of 20, he has, indeed, developed his own distinct voice, a sound that eludes labels and navigates both mainstream and obscure musical genres. Daryl Johns appears on a film documentary marking the 70th birthday of Chick Corea and has a quick scene in Woody Allen’s new movie, Café Society. He also plays the late night show at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola in New York City. He is a junior at the Manhattan School of Music. Tickets are $15 for adults; $10 for senior citizens, faculty, staff, and alumni; and free for all students. All tickets except student admission are available online at www.sunyorange.edu/arts_comm/ticketing.shtml.
The box office opens at 7 p.m. before the performance.
